Short answer: use 1080 × 1350 px (4:5) for the biggest post in the feed, or 1080 × 1080 px (1:1) for a classic square.
All Instagram post sizes
| Type | Pixels | Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Portrait (recommended) | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 |
| Square | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 |
| Landscape | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 |
| Carousel slides | 1080 × 1350 (all slides same ratio) | 4:5 |
The profile grid crops to 3:4
Instagram’s profile grid shows posts as 3:4 rectangles. A 4:5 portrait post loses a thin strip at the top and bottom there; a square post loses a little on the left and right. Keep headlines and faces in the centre and they will look right in both the feed and the grid.
Tips
- Instagram stores images at 1080 px width — uploading wider images does not make them sharper.
- Export PNG for graphics with text; JPG for photos.
- Use the same size for all slides in a carousel; the first slide sets the ratio.
