How to make a YouTube thumbnail
- Pick a template like “Punchy thumbnail” or “Versus”. They are designed for small screens.
- Add your photo. A close-up of a face showing emotion is one of the strongest thumbnail elements. Upload it and place it on one side.
- Write 2–5 big words. The thumbnail should add curiosity, not repeat the title. Use a heavy font such as Anton or Bebas Neue, and add an outline (stroke) or shadow.
- Download JPG or PNG. YouTube accepts files up to 2 MB. JPG is usually smaller; PNG is sharper for flat graphics.

- Readable at tiny size. On phones a thumbnail can be just 160 pixels wide. Zoom out in the editor to 25% to test it.
- High contrast. Yellow, red and white on dark backgrounds stand out in YouTube’s white and dark themes.
- One focal point. A face, an object or a before/after comparison — not all three.
- Honest promise. Thumbnails that mislead hurt watch time and can get videos limited. Show what the video delivers.
- Consistent style. Same fonts and colors across a series help viewers recognise your channel.
