How to create a QR code
- Open Elements in the editor and find the QR code section.
- Paste your link (for example
https://your-website.com) or type any text. - Choose the code color and background color, then click Add QR code.
- Add a label such as “Scan me” or “Menu”, your logo or a frame.
- Download PNG for screens, PNG transparent for placing on other designs, or PDF for print.
To change an existing code, select it, edit the link and click Update selected QR code.
Free and never expires
Ontools creates static QR codes: your link is stored directly in the pattern. There is no redirect through our servers, so the code keeps working forever and nobody can disable it or put it behind a paywall. The only thing to know: if the link changes, you need a new code. If you expect to change the destination often, point the QR code to a page on your own website that you can update.
Tips for QR codes that scan every time
- Contrast: dark code on a light background. Inverted (light on dark) codes do not scan on some phones.
- Size: print at least 2 × 2 cm (0.8 in). For posters seen from a distance, make it bigger — roughly 1 cm per 10 cm of scanning distance.
- Quiet zone: keep a margin around the code. Ontools adds one automatically; don’t place other elements over it.
- Short links: shorter URLs make simpler, easier-to-scan codes.
- Test: scan the printed proof with two or three different phones before printing hundreds of copies.
- Tell people why to scan: “Scan for the menu”, “Scan to book”, “Scan for 10% off”.

Is it safe?
The code is generated in your browser — the link you type is not sent to our server. When you scan QR codes from others, check the address your phone shows before opening it.
Frequently asked questions
Do these QR codes expire?
No. They are static codes with the link stored directly in the pattern, so they work forever and need no account.
Can I change the link later?
A static code cannot be edited after printing. Create a new one, or point the code to a page on your site that you can update.
Can I change the QR code color?
Yes. Pick any code and background color, but keep strong contrast — a dark code on a light background scans best.
What is the minimum print size?
About 2 × 2 cm for close scanning. Make it larger for posters viewed from a distance.
Can I download a transparent QR code?
Choose a light background for scanning, or use Download → PNG transparent to remove the canvas background; the code keeps its own background color.
