How to make an Instagram post online
- Choose a template. The editor above opens at 1080 × 1080 pixels, the size Instagram uses for square posts. Click any layout in the Templates panel.
- Change the words. Double-click a text box to type. Use the toolbar to change the font, size, color, alignment and spacing.
- Add your photo or logo. Open Uploads and pick an image from your phone or computer. It is added to the canvas without being uploaded to any server.
- Download. Press Download → PNG for the best quality, or JPG if you want a smaller file. Upload it to Instagram as a normal post.
Which size should an Instagram post be?
Instagram shows feed posts at 1080 pixels wide. A square post is 1080 × 1080 (1:1). A portrait post can be up to 1080 × 1350 (4:5), and it takes up more space in the feed, which often means more attention. Since 2025 the profile grid shows posts as 3:4 rectangles, so keep important text away from the top and bottom edges of a 4:5 design.
| Post type | Size (px) | Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Square post | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 |
| Portrait post | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 |
| Landscape post | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 |
| Story / Reel cover | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 |
Need a different size? Open the Resize panel, choose a preset or type your own width and height, and keep “Scale my content” ticked so your design follows.
Design tips for posts that stop the scroll
- One message per post. People look at a post for about a second. A short headline of three to six words works better than a paragraph.
- Big, bold type. Most people see your post on a phone. If the headline is not readable at thumbnail size, make it larger.
- Strong contrast. Dark text on a light background or white text on a dark or saturated background. Avoid placing text over busy parts of a photo, or add a solid shape behind it.
- Stay consistent. Use the same two fonts and three or four colors across your posts. Your followers will start recognising your content before they read the name.
- Carousels. For a carousel, create the first slide, save the project file, then duplicate the design and change only the text. Every slide keeps the same style.
Why use Ontools for Instagram graphics?
The editor works in your browser with nothing to install, no account to create and no watermark on downloads. Everything you add stays on your device, and your current design is saved automatically in your browser, so a refresh does not lose your work. When you want to post the same design as a Story, use Resize to switch to 1080 × 1920 in one click.
Frequently asked questions
Is this Instagram post maker really free?
Yes. All templates, fonts and downloads are free. There is no sign-up and no watermark.
What size is an Instagram post?
A square post is 1080 × 1080 pixels. A portrait post is 1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5), which is the largest size the feed shows.
Should I download PNG or JPG for Instagram?
PNG keeps text and flat colors sharp, so it is usually the better choice for graphics. JPG makes a smaller file and is fine for photo-heavy designs. Instagram re-compresses both.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Images you add are read by your browser and stay on your device. Nothing is sent to our server.
