The right size for a Facebook cover
Facebook displays a page cover at about 820 × 312 pixels on desktop and crops the sides on phones, where it appears closer to 640 × 360. Designing at double resolution, 1640 × 624, keeps text crisp on high-density screens. The editor above starts at this size.
How to make your cover
- Choose a wide template such as “Profile banner” or “Event night”.
- Write your page name and a one-line promise: what you do and for whom.
- Add a photo of your shop, team or product as the background. Darken it with the brightness slider if text is hard to read.
- Download as PNG and upload it under Edit cover photo on your page.
What to put on a Facebook cover
- Local businesses: a real photo of the place, the business name and opening hours or phone number.
- Creators: your topic in a few words and when you post (“New videos every Tuesday”).
- Campaigns and events: the date, the offer and a short call to action. Change the cover when the campaign ends.
- Groups: group covers are wider (1640 × 856). Use the Resize panel with a custom size.
Why does my cover look blurry?
Facebook compresses images heavily. Upload a PNG for designs with text and logos, avoid very thin fonts, and do not upload a small image that Facebook has to enlarge. Exporting the 1640 × 624 design from Ontools gives Facebook enough pixels to work with.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a Facebook cover photo?
Facebook shows it at 820 × 312 on desktop. We recommend designing at 1640 × 624 for sharpness, keeping text in the centre for mobile.
Why is part of my cover cut off on my phone?
On mobile, Facebook crops the left and right sides. Keep important text and logos inside the central area.
PNG or JPG for a Facebook cover?
PNG for covers with text or logos, because it avoids blurry edges. JPG is fine for pure photos.
